Sustainable Development

Sustainable Development

Background

Protecting the environment is a necessity that should be done right away and cannot be delayed anymore. It is not only the responsibility of the government or nation leader only, but also the responsibility of any individual on earth from a toddler to elderly. Each person has to make an effort to safe the environment around us based on our own capacity. How little it our effort is will still be beneficial for the realization of liveable earth for the generations after us in the future. Nurturing the awareness on the sustainable environment is a wise action that shoud be done by everyone. Nurturing human’s awareness on the sustainable environment is not an easy thing to do as it relates to private, group, or organization interest factors, which at the end is always about materialistic subject. The awareness on sustainable environment is often gone and succumbed to the private and group interests.

Nurturing the human’s awareness on the importance of sustainable environment is not an easy thing to do, but it should be worked on. One of the efforts that can be done is by giving early education and direction on the importance of sustainable environment through learning communities at home, at school, at the society. Thus, each individual has a right and duty to protect the environment around them by not littering, knowing which garbage can be recycled and which one cannot be recycled, being efficient in using various products made of natural materials such as paper or fossil fuel. Self discipline can also be applied in the daily life especially in providing daily needs such as always buying recycleable products or refill products, consuming energy efficient products. There are still many more things that we can do in our daily lives to protect our environment and nature.

The living environment has a central concept in the ecology that is called ecosystem. Its components are related to each other and working in order as a unity. Without too much human’s action or intervention, natural cycle will stay constant. The damage caused by the nature will be repaired by the nature itself. Nevertheless, the damage caused by human beings are difficult to be fixed by the nature. The damage that has done left scars that make it impossible for the nature to go back as it was before.  As industry develops in a lot of countries, environment problem needs more attention, especially from the industrial countries. The environment problem is not only felt by developed countries but also by developing countries. Even in the developing countries, the environmental problems  in the developing countries result to more severe damage. The government efforts to realize fair and wealthy life for its people without damaging the environment are followed up by setting a sustainable development program that is often called as Sustainable Ecofriendly Development. The environment focused development is an effort to gradually improve human’s life quality by considering environmental factors. This environment focused development is known as Sustainable Development.

Course Main Content

Sustainable Development is one of the Scientific Principle Patterns at Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ). Sustainable Development is broken down in operational into  Sustainable Development I course which is managed by the university and taken by fourth semester students from 10 study programs. At the end of the course, students are expected to be able to compare theories they learned through green campaign activities. They are also expected to put those theories into practice in student’s project. After taking Sustainable Development I course, students take Sustainable Development II course in their study program.

Various materials discussed in Sustainable Development I course:

1. SED Basic Principles (UPJ Three Pillars, Urban and Sustainable Development in daily life)

  • Knowledge and awareness (Sustainable Development basic concept and principles)
  • The application of Sustainable Development in daily life (in general, for details see chapter…)

2. Population and Environment

  • Supporting and Carrying Capacity
  • Ecological Footprint

3. Sustainable Development

  • Environment
  • Social - Community Development & Social Change
  • Economy - Kyoto Protocol

4. Climate Change

5. Green Policy

  • Local Wisdom
  • Environmental Ethics
  • Environmental Justice

Sustainable Development Competence

Based on the vision and mission of UPJ, the Sustainable Development competence is set. Elaboratively, the Sustainable Development competence is explained as follows:

  1. Communication Skills. Students are able to accept and articulate ideas and thoughts effectively both orally and in written forms.
  2. Cultural Sensitivity. Students are able to understand and appreciate their own and other cultures, including religion and beliefs, comprehend the values of humanity and multiculturalism in decision making in the intercultural context as well as have the skills in working with various different team.
  3. Reasoning and Problem Solving. Student are able to formulate problems, collect relevant ideas, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information as well as apply ideas in making decision and solving problems creatively and innovatively for the sake of the society well being.
  4. Learning Integration. Students are able to integrate incoming ideas from various different context and point of views as well as responsive towards changes.
  5. Lifelong learning. Students are able to be open minded, think critically, take innitiaves, ask questions, and consider new ideas for the sake of independent intellectual development.
  6. Moral and Social Responsibilities. Students are able to internalize academic norms and values, conduct ethical evaluation, treat others fairly and equally, be responsible in taking measured risks, develop tolerance, and have concern towards the environment.

After learning using this module, students are expected to posess enough competence that is elaborated as follows:

  • Cognitive: The students’ cognitive improvement is shown by their ability to mention, explain, elaborate, analyse, and evaluate learning concepts.
  • Affective: The affective competence relate to the interest and behavior that can be in the form of ability to take position, work together, be committed, be confident, be honest, respect others’ opinion, and control ourselves. All of these skills should be part of learning objectives of the university courses.
  • Psychomotoric: The psychomotoric competence reflects on the ability to realize what have been known and experienced such as following all the learning procedures with good acts and ethics as the set requirements, as well as to work together in a study group.

Or in other word, in this Sustainable Development module, students’ competence and character needed to understand and implement Sustainable Development in the individual’s and group’s life (family, company or nation) are also developed. These characters competence are planned using competence platform approach as seen in table 1.

Table 1. Character Competence based on Aspects Area

Materials Delivery Procedures

The course is conducted interactively using combination of various methods such as lectures, discussion, interactive dialogue, case study analysis, field study, and assignment completion. Scientific concept and facts of each sub topic mentioned above are delivered through lectures. Meanwhile, the concept understanding process is done through interactive discussion. The whole learning and teaching process is aimed at the improvement of students’ ability to think critically, integratedly, and systematically. The interactive discussion method is aimed to enhance the sensitivity and social skills which are developed through individual and group assignment completion.

The Sustainable Development course is conducted in the form of presentation projected through a projector, such as the delivery of environment case study. For the sake of achieving Sustainable Development competence, UPJ recommended learning methods that are based on Student-Centered Learning (SCL). Table 2 elaborates in short learning models recommended together with students and lecturers role in the class. This table is expected to be used in conducting the learning and teaching process at UPJ.
