Check Out the Excitement on Day 2 of UPJ Students at the Cologne Summer School: Learning About Sustainability and Innovation

Bintaro, South Tangerang, 20/08/2024 - Ten students from Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ) participated in the Summer School at the University of Cologne, Germany. The second day of the Summer School program, held on August 6, 2024, focused on activities related to sustainability, development, and innovation.

The journey began with an in-depth understanding of the long history of the University of Cologne, which was founded in 1388. Dean Prof. Dr. Thonemann skillfully guided the participants through a timeline, sharing fascinating stories about a campus that has been a center of knowledge for centuries.

However, this journey wasn't just about the past. The students were also encouraged to face global challenges that lie ahead, one of which is the issue of microplastics. The interactive lecture, filled with data and facts, heightened participants' awareness of the dangers these tiny plastic particles pose to the environment.

Zahra Amelia, a student from the Product Design Department, expressed her surprise at the facts presented. "I never imagined that microplastics could have such a huge impact. This has motivated me to conduct further research on product designs that can be developed and applied to the rivers around campus," she said.

The highlight of the program was an inspiring session with Karsten Hirch, founder of Plastic Fischer. His story of struggle in cleaning rivers in Asia, including the Citarum River in Indonesia, ignited the participants' enthusiasm. Hirch vividly shared how his concern for the environment drove him to establish a business with a positive impact.

"I am inspired by Karsten's courage in turning problems into opportunities," said Vicka Elliana Ristanti, a UPJ Management student. "This proves that business can go hand in hand with environmental preservation efforts."

Plastic Fischer has not only succeeded in collecting millions of kilograms of plastic from rivers but has also created jobs for the surrounding communities. This success story is tangible proof that social innovation can have a significant economic and environmental impact.

The experience on the second day of the Summer School in Cologne has provided valuable insights for UPJ students to contribute to sustainable development in Indonesia. They are determined to spread knowledge and inspire their peers and the wider community.
