Indonesian Architecture Museum Holds Liem Bwan Tjie: Three Times Three Worlds Exhibition at Pembangunan Jaya University

Bintaro, South Tangerang, 25/02/2025 - The Indonesian Architecture Museum Foundation and Universitas Pembangunan Jaya present the exhibition Liem Bwan Tjie: Tiga Masa Tiga Dunia as an effort to trace the life journey and works of a national pioneer architect who connects three worlds: Dutch architecture, Chinese culture, and the spirit of post-independence Indonesia. The exhibition opens on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the Indonesian Architecture Museum Gallery, Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ), South Tangerang.

This exhibition is a spin-off of the Indonesia and the Amsterdam School exhibition previously held at Museum Het Schip Amsterdam and Erasmus Huis Jakarta. Through archival collections from @nieuweinstituut Rotterdam, the Liem Bwan Tjie Family, the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI), and the Chinese Indonesian Heritage Center Foundation, visitors can understand Liem Bwan Tjie's architectural journey in three major developmental phases, namely the influence of the Amsterdam School in his works, the connection with Chinese culture, and adaptation to the changing architectural landscape of post-independence Indonesia.

Avianti Armand, Chairperson of the Indonesian Architecture Museum Foundation, said that this exhibition is an important moment in understanding Indonesia's architectural heritage that often goes unnoticed. “Liem Bwan Tjie is a figure who bridges various cultural influences in architecture. With this exhibition, we want to highlight how the legacy of pioneering architects like Liem contributes to Indonesia's architectural identity today,” she said.

As an educational institution committed to the development of urban science, Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ) continues to encourage initiatives that enrich the horizons of students and the wider community. With an approach based on urban studies and design, UPJ plays an active role in supporting various academic activities and exhibitions that highlight the development of architecture in Indonesia. Through participation in this exhibition, UPJ strengthens its position as a learning center that connects history, culture, and innovation in architecture.

The Rector of Pembangunan Jaya University, Ir. Yudi Samyudia, Ph.D. also emphasized the importance of collaboration in enriching the academic and professional horizons of architecture students. “As an educational institution that focuses on urban studies and design, we strongly support initiatives that open up space for discussion about the history and development of Indonesian architecture.
