UPJ Architecture Students as Indonesian Delegates at Live Design Discourse 2025 Pattani - Thailand
Bintaro, South Tangerang 14/03/2025 - Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ) made another achievement in the international arena. UPJ Architecture Study Program student, Kharisma Fajar Umbara, succeeded in becoming one of the four delegates representing Indonesia in the International Live Design Discourse (LDD) 2025 event which took place in Pattani, Thailand, on February 18-21, 2025. The event brought together architecture students and young architects from four Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, with a total of 20 selected delegates.
As one of the four students representing Indonesia, Kharisma and her team worked on the workshop Architecture for Resilience and Flooding: Building for a Changing Climate. The design focused on how buildings can adapt to flooding.
“We were asked to renovate a character's house to adapt to flooding. As one of the delegates from Indonesia, I came up with a design idea with the concept of swapping the entrance to the second floor and isolating the first floor, so that flooding does not enter the house. This concept was considered very realistic and easy to apply. Finally, our work was exhibited at the ASA MELAYU event, a major architectural event in Thailand,” said Kharisma Fajar Umbara.
After presenting his work, Kharisma received the Most Impactful Design award from the jury for the concept that was considered innovative and solutive.
Live Design Discourse Pattani (LDDPTN) is a prestigious forum that brings together young architects and architecture students in innovative design discussions and workshops. The event is organized in collaboration between four renowned architectural associations in the Southeast Asian region, namely:
Ikatan Arsitek Indonesia (IAI), Indonesia.
Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), Malaysia
Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), Singapore
Association of Siamese Architects (ASA), Thailand
The event aims to encourage the professionalism of young architects and improve the quality and insight of architecture students at the global level. This year, LDDPTN invited 20 selected participants consisting of four architecture student delegates and one junior architect from each country.
Head of UPJ Architecture Study Program, Rahma Purisari, ST.Ars., M.Ars., expressed her appreciation for this extraordinary achievement. “The participation of UPJ students in international events such as LDDPTN is clear evidence that architecture education at UPJ is able to compete at the global level. We are proud of Kharisma's achievement and hope that this achievement can inspire other students to continue working and innovating,” he said.
The Rector of Universitas Pembangunan Jaya (UPJ), Ir. Yudi Samyudia, Ph.D., also expressed his appreciation for the achievement. “Kharisma's participation in the LDD 2025 event is clear evidence of the quality of education at UPJ which always encourages students to excel in international activities. We continue to be committed to supporting students so that they can develop and bring the good name of the university in the global arena,” he said.
As an institution that continues to encourage innovation and creativity, UPJ is committed to opening more opportunities for its students to participate in international collaborative activities and programs. With the support of lecturers and adequate educational facilities, students are expected to continue developing their abilities and insights in the world of architecture.
With this achievement, UPJ further strengthens its position as one of the universities that actively participates in international academic and professional forums. Going forward, the university will continue to encourage students to engage in global activities and develop innovative and impactful design solutions for society.
